While the course aims to provide students with a background of psychopharmacology necessary to achieve clinical licensing, appropriate use of psychopharmaceuticals and possible iatrogenic outcomes due to excessive and prolonged use isanalyzed. Sociopolitical factors that influence patterns ofprescription psychiatric drugs will be discussed. Considerationwill also be given to the use of forms of alternate andcomplimentary medication that entail less harmful side effectsas well as psychotherapy programs that decrease lifelongdependence on pharmaceuticals.
